When I was five years old I was friends with a boy named Scott Opdyke, the son of a local Presbyterian minister. Scott, knowing that I was enamoured with The Bionic Man show on television, gave me this small horseshoe magnet telling me that if I placed it in my shoe and kept it there for several weeks, that it would help me to develop bionic powers.

   I wore it around in my shoe for many weeks. I wasn’t sure if it was working or not. I didn’t even know what bionic meant. I just really, really wanted it to be true.
